How to Prepare for Your International Move
Proper packing and complete documentation are the two factors most likely to cause delays or damage during an international move. Follow these guidelines carefully.
📦 Packing instructions
- Declutter before you packReducing your volume by 20–30% saves significant cost. Sell, donate or discard items you will not need. Every cubic metre counts in international freight.
- Use double-walled boxesStandard supermarket boxes are not suitable for international transit. Use double-walled corrugated boxes (60×40×40 cm). We supply professional packing materials on request.
- Wrap all fragile items individuallyWrap each glass, ceramic and fragile item in two layers of bubble wrap, secured with tape. Fill any empty space in the box with paper or foam to prevent movement.
- Label every box clearlyLabel top, front and both sides with: your name, destination address, room (e.g. "Kitchen"), and contents (e.g. "Plates and glasses — FRAGILE"). Number boxes and keep a master list.
- Disassemble large furnitureBeds, wardrobes and large shelving must be disassembled. Keep all screws and small parts in labelled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture.
- Photograph all valuablesBefore packing, photograph all electronics, artwork and valuable items for insurance documentation. Note serial numbers of electronics.
- Do not pack prohibited itemsProhibited internationally: aerosols, flammable liquids, batteries in bulk, food products, plants, firearms. Check destination country rules — our team advises you during the survey.
All international moves require customs documentation. Missing or incorrect documents can result in your shipment being held at the port for weeks. We prepare all documents — here is what you must provide to us:
- Detailed packing inventory list — a complete list of every item in your shipment, including estimated value and quantity. Required for all destinations.
- Proof of change of residence — e.g. employment contract, lease agreement, or visa at the destination country confirming you are relocating permanently.
- Passport / ID copy — a copy of the passport or national ID of the primary shipper. Both origin and destination may require this.
- Certificate of ownership — for antiques, artwork or items over 10 years old, a provenance certificate may be required by customs.
- Import licence (if required) — certain countries require an import licence for household goods. We advise you based on your destination.
- Power of attorney — some destinations require you to authorise GIA Service or our local partner to act as customs agent on your behalf.

GIA Service ApS is based in Copenhagen but we collect from any city or address in Denmark for international moves. A travel surcharge applies for locations outside Copenhagen.

We assess your volume, timeline and requirements before issuing any binding price. No surprise costs on moving day.
We prepare and file all required customs paperwork for your destination country. This is included in our full-service packages.
Basic liability is included on all moves. We strongly recommend all-risk insurance — 1.5–2.5% of declared value. We advise during the survey.
Our vans hold 20 m³, 3.5 tonnes, with a 1,000 kg tail lift. Multiple vans dispatched for larger moves. Professional crew for loading and unloading.
For all Nordic moves via road, we monitor both the Øresund Bridge (Denmark–Sweden) and the Great Belt Bridge (Zealand–Funen/Jutland) in real time. Closures directly affect your moving schedule.
Every quote on this page is an estimate based on what you tell us. The reality is that one person's "2-bedroom apartment" can contain twice the volume of another's. To give you a binding, no-surprise price, we offer a professional pre-move survey.

Our calculator provides a good-faith estimate based on the information you provide. However, international moving prices are sensitive to the actual volume of your belongings — and this is almost always larger than people expect.
• "1–2 bedroom" apartments often contain 30–50% more volume than estimated
• Basement and storage room contents are frequently forgotten
• Attic items, garden furniture, tools and boxes add significant volume
• Special items (piano, artwork, antiques) require separate handling
• Access difficulties (narrow stairs, no parking, cobblestones) add time
The estimate you receive is not a binding contract. A binding quote is issued only after a pre-move survey. We recommend all customers book a survey to avoid surprises on moving day. Undeclared volume discovered on moving day will be charged at the agreed per-m³ rate — no exceptions.
All prices include a fuel surcharge buffer reflecting current diesel prices in Denmark (~17–18 DKK/L as of 2025). International freight rates are also affected by geopolitical factors, port congestion, and seasonal demand. Our prices are reviewed quarterly. The quote you receive is valid for 30 days from the date of issue.
