The short answer
When you move your home to the UK, you can claim relief from customs charges on your personal belongings with Transfer of Residence relief, form ToR1, on GOV.UK. You can declare the goods before they are shipped. GOV.UK asks for a list of the items you are bringing, proof of your UK address dated within the last 3 months, and proof of your usual address outside the UK dated within the last 6 months.
Checklist
- A ToR1 application on GOV.UK, ideally before the goods are shipped
- A list of the items (our shipping data sheet produces it for you)
- Proof of your UK address, dated within the last 3 months
- Proof of your usual address outside the UK, dated within the last 6 months
- The ToR reference from HMRC, which you give to us for the import declaration
Before you book
Apply for ToR1 early: without relief, normal customs charges can apply when the goods arrive. GOV.UK notes that if you move from the EU to Northern Ireland, you do not need to apply for ToR relief. Describe every item in plain words, for example “used cotton bed linen”.
