GIA gateway service · Copenhagen to Japan

Buy in Denmark, Shipped to Japan

Your Danish purchase, sent on to Japan. New goods with a receipt, received in Copenhagen, checked, repacked and tracked to your ground floor.

In short

GIA ships brand-new furniture, lighting and design pieces bought from Danish shops to private buyers and companies in Japan, including from shops that will not deliver to Japan themselves. Your goods need their original packaging and a receipt. GIA receives or collects them in Copenhagen, inspects and repacks them, and ships them on, and you follow the shipment on giaservice.dk. Japanese import consumption tax, any customs duty and the clearance are paid by the receiver, and delivery is to the ground floor.

Pricing

How the price is set.

Every shipment gets a fixed price in writing before anything moves. The price depends on:

Size and weightThe measurements and weight of the boxes, or of the pallet once packed.
DestinationThe country and the delivery address.
RepackingWhether the goods travel in their own boxes or need a pallet, extra protection or a crate.
CollectionWhether the shop delivers to GIA, or GIA collects from the shop.
Insurance valueBasic transport insurance is included. The value of the goods is part of the quote.

Customs clearance, import duties and taxes in the destination country are paid by the receiver. GIA prepares the export documents in Denmark, and the shop's receipt serves as the commercial invoice.

Importing your Danish purchase into Japan

Goods sent from Denmark to Japan go through Japan Customs. Customs duty depends on the type of goods, and consumption tax is charged on imports in the same way as on goods bought in Japan.

Consumption tax on imports The standard rate is 10 % (7.8 % national and 2.2 % local consumption tax). It is calculated on the customs value of the goods plus any customs duty.
Customs duty on furniture Japan Customs lists seats and furniture for the office, kitchen or bedroom (Chapter 94) as duty free. Other goods have their own rates: for example, kitchenware and household articles of glass or ceramics are listed at free to 3.9 %, and carpets at 6.3 to 8.4 %.
Low-value shipments Goods with a total customs value of 10,000 yen or less are exempt from customs duty and consumption tax, with exceptions such as leather bags, leather shoes and knitted clothing. Furniture and lighting shipped through GIA are normally well above this amount.
Who pays The receiver pays the consumption tax, any customs duty and the clearance in Japan. The carrier’s customs broker declares the goods and tells the receiver what is owed before delivery.
Pallets Japan requires wood packaging, including pallets, to be treated and marked under ISPM 15. Shipments to Japan travel on heat treated, stamped Euro pallets.

Check the rate for your exact product

Duty rates in Japan are set per product code. Japan Customs lists the rates for major products and publishes the full tariff schedule, and it recommends asking a Customs appraiser about a specific item. The Danish receipt travels with the shipment as the commercial invoice, so a clear product description and the material (for example wood, metal, glass or wool) on it helps the declaration.

Typical Danish purchases for Japan

The gateway service suits new Danish design for the home: lounge chairs and sofas, dining tables and chairs, pendant and floor lamps, sideboards and shelving, and design pieces bought together as a set. Danish lighting and furniture brands, such as Louis Poulsen, are well known in Japan; we name them only as examples of what buyers order. GIA is not connected to any brand or shop. Each item travels in the manufacturer’s packaging with the shop’s receipt.

Delivery to the ground floor in Japan

The shipment is handed over at street level at your address: at the entrance, in the building lobby, or at a ground floor room you show us. Carrying the boxes upstairs or into an apartment is arranged by the receiver. If your building has a management office, a delivery entrance or restricted delivery hours, tell us in the request so the delivery can be planned properly.

Questions from buyers in Japan
