In Denmark, large household appliances—known as “stort husholdningsaffald” or “hvidevarer”—are classified as bulky waste and cannot be placed in ordinary household rubbish bins or recycling containers. Danish environmental law requires that appliances containing refrigerants, oils, or electronic components be processed at approved waste handling facilities.
The options for Danish residents are a booked bulky waste collection from your kommune, a personal trip to your local genbrugscenter with transport you arrange yourself, or a professional collection service. For anyone in a Copenhagen apartment without a car—which is the majority of residents—getting a fridge or washing machine to a genbrugscenter independently is not practical.
