Post-Brexit shipping explained — and handled — for British clients

British in Denmark. Post-Brexit — sorted. Moving · shipping · ToR relief · exhibition logistics · office clearance · expat services — all of Denmark

Brexit changed how personal effects and commercial goods move between the UK and Denmark. Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief can eliminate import duties entirely for British nationals relocating permanently. GIA Service ApS advises on this for every UK-to-Denmark shipment we handle — and we prepare the Danish export documentation correctly from the start.

Post-Brexit shipping — UK ↔ Denmark
What changed and what you need to know
UK is no longer EU — customs apply
Since January 2021, the UK is outside the EU. Goods moving between the UK and Denmark require customs declarations in both directions. Personal effects are not exempt unless ToR relief is claimed.
Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief
British nationals moving permanently to Denmark may be eligible for ToR relief — which allows household goods to enter Denmark duty-free. Must be applied before the shipment departs the UK. We advise on eligibility and help prepare the Danish documentation.
Commercial goods — full customs
British companies shipping commercial goods to Denmark need full customs documentation including commercial invoice, packing list, HS codes and EORI number. We coordinate the Danish side of this process.

✓ We handle export documentation from Denmark and advise on Danish customs requirements. UK import clearance is handled by your UK agent — we can recommend if needed.

What British clients need in Denmark

Post-Brexit logistics.
Explained clearly.

Moving from the UK to Denmark — what actually changes

Post-Brexit, moving personal effects from the UK to Denmark requires customs clearance in both countries. This sounds daunting but it is manageable — and the key tool is Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief.

ToR relief allows British nationals moving permanently to Denmark to import their household goods without paying Danish import duties. The conditions are specific: you must have lived in the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, the goods must have been in your possession and used for at least six months, and the application must be submitted before the goods arrive in Denmark.

We advise on ToR eligibility for every UK-to-Denmark shipment we quote. We cannot file the ToR application on your behalf — that is done directly with SKAT (the Danish Tax Authority) — but we prepare the Danish-side documentation correctly and in the right format.

ToR application — key facts
Apply to SKAT at: skat.dk/toldopkraevning
Required: proof of UK residency for 12+ months, proof you are relocating permanently to Denmark, itemised list of goods
Timeline: apply before your goods arrive in Denmark
Result: household goods enter Denmark duty-free under ToR approval

British companies shipping commercial goods to Denmark

UK companies shipping to Denmark post-Brexit need: a commercial invoice, packing list, HS (Harmonized System) codes for each product category, an EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number for both UK exporter and Danish importer, and a customs declaration at both ends.

GIA Service ApS handles the Danish delivery end — collection from the Danish port or warehouse, final delivery to your customer or distribution partner, and all coordination with the Danish customs agent. We do not handle UK export clearance — your UK freight forwarder manages that end.

British brands exhibiting at Copenhagen design events

British design, fashion and lifestyle brands at 3 Days of Design, CIFF and Copenhagen Fashion Week face a complication their EU competitors do not: their exhibition pieces cross a customs border on both legs of the journey. Temporary import relief (ATA Carnet) is the correct tool for exhibition goods — it allows goods to enter Denmark temporarily for exhibition purposes without full import duties, provided they return to the UK after the event.

We handle the Copenhagen logistics end — collection from the venue after the exhibition closes, short-term storage, and coordination for return shipment to the UK with your freight forwarder. We advise on ATA Carnet requirements from the Danish side.

Post-Brexit questions from British clients

The questions everyone asks.
Answered properly.

What is Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief and how do I qualify?
ToR relief allows British nationals moving permanently to Denmark to import household goods without paying Danish import duties. You must have lived in the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, the goods must have been in your personal use for at least 6 months, and you must apply before the goods arrive in Denmark. Apply through skat.dk. We advise on the documentation format and timing.
Do my household goods face customs when moving from the UK to Denmark?
Yes — since Brexit, goods moving from the UK to Denmark cross a customs border. Personal effects are subject to Danish import duties unless you successfully claim ToR relief. Commercial goods face full customs in both directions. We handle the Danish export documentation correctly and advise on what your UK freight forwarder needs to prepare at the UK end.
What is an ATA Carnet and do I need one for exhibition goods?
An ATA Carnet is a temporary import document that allows goods — including exhibition pieces — to enter a country temporarily without paying full customs duties, provided they return to the country of origin after the event. British brands exhibiting at Copenhagen design events should use an ATA Carnet for their exhibition pieces. Apply through the British Chambers of Commerce in the UK. We handle the Danish end of the logistics once your goods arrive.
What is slutrengøring and why do I need it?
Slutrengøring is the Danish term for end-of-tenancy cleaning. Danish landlords and property managers require apartments to be professionally cleaned to a specific standard when you leave — not just tidied up. If the cleaning is not to standard, the landlord can deduct costs from your deposit. We provide slutrengøring from DKK 2,195 for apartments up to 70 m² — to the standard Danish landlords require.
Can I claim servicefradrag as a British expat in Denmark?
Yes — once you are registered in Denmark with a CPR number and paying Danish income tax, you are eligible for servicefradrag regardless of nationality. This is a 27% tax deduction on labour costs for home cleaning and assembly services. We issue receipts correctly formatted for the deduction on request.
How do I register in Denmark as a British national post-Brexit?
British nationals post-Brexit are not EU citizens, so you need a residence permit to live and work in Denmark for more than 90 days. Apply through the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) at nyidanmark.dk. Once approved, register at International House Copenhagen (Gyldenløvesgade 11) for your CPR number. The CPR number is required for all Danish services including a bank account and health insurance.
