What Danish municipal waste services will not take — and we will
The Danish affaldssystem — municipal waste collection — handles regular household waste sorted into the correct bins. What it does not handle is everything else. Here is what your regular renovationsaffald, storskrald and dagrenovation collection will not accept — and that we will.
Bulky household items — storskrald Furniture, mattresses, large household items and bulky waste require a separate storskrald booking with your kommune. In Copenhagen Municipality this means scheduling a collection in advance and leaving items on the pavement at a specific time. If you miss the collection window or have more items than the booking allows, the items stay on your pavement.
Electronics and e-waste Televisions, computers, phones, kitchen appliances and all electrical equipment are WEEE waste. They cannot go in ordinary bins and cannot be left for regular collection. They must go to an approved WEEE collection point or be collected by a licensed service.
Hazardous waste — farligt affald Paint, solvents, cleaning chemicals, pesticides, batteries and similar household hazardous materials cannot go in ordinary waste in Denmark. They require farligt affald collection at a genbrugscenter or professional collection.
Construction and renovation debris Tiles, plasterboard, timber, concrete and renovation waste cannot go in ordinary household bins and are not collected by standard municipal services. They require either a skip, a genbrugscenter trip or professional collection.
Garden waste in excess Danish garden waste — haveaffald — is collected by some kommuner on a schedule, but large volumes from garden clearances and seasonal tidying exceed what scheduled collections accept. We take all volumes of garden waste.
Items in quantities that exceed bin capacity Renovation projects, flat clearances and property handovers generate waste volumes that simply exceed what any standard bin arrangement can handle. We collect everything in a single visit regardless of volume.
Rubbish removal and the Danish waste system — what you need to know
Denmark has one of the most developed household waste systems in Europe. Danish households are required to sort waste into separate streams — madaffald, restaffald, papir, pap, glas, metal and plastic — depending on the kommune. Getting this right matters both for environmental reasons and because incorrect sorting can result in the bin not being collected.
For items that fall outside the standard streams — bulky waste, hazardous waste, electronics, construction debris — the correct route in Denmark is the genbrugscenter. Copenhagen has genbrugsstationer at several locations including Valby, Amager, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg. These are free to use for Copenhagen residents but require you to transport your waste yourself during their opening hours.
